What even is an "ear stack"?
An ear stack is just a curated combo of multiple piercings on one ear, styled together on purpose instead of just... happening one at a time with no plan. Think layers of hoops and studs working together instead of fighting for attention. The magic is in the mix.
How many piercings do I need to start a stack?
You can start stacking with just two! A classic lobe plus one extra (a second lobe, a helix, whatever calls to you) already counts. Stacks build over time. Nobody wakes up with eight healed piercings on day one, and that's the fun part. It's a collection you grow into.
What order should I get pierced in?
Start with whatever you're most excited about, but know that lobes heal the fastest (8-12 weeks) while cartilage placements like helix, tragus, or conch take much longer (6-12 months). Most of our customers start with a couple of lobe piercings to get comfortable, then add cartilage placements one at a time so they're not managing multiple long healing periods at once.
Do I need to wait between piercings?
You don't have to wait for one to be fully healed before getting another, but we always recommend spacing out multiple piercings in the same sitting so your ear (and your pain tolerance) isn't overwhelmed. It's also a good idea to think about which side you sleep on (if you're a side sleeper), so you have a side you can comfortably lay on. Talk to your piercer about what's realistic for your ear anatomy and healing history. In our studios, we don't do more than 4 piercings per client in a single sitting.
How do I actually plan the layout?
This is the fun part. Start with your "anchor" piece (usually a hoop or a statement stud in the lobe) then build around it with smaller studs, huggies, or a second hoop. A good rule of thumb: vary the sizes. A stack of five identical studs in a row reads more "polka dot" than "curated." Mix a hoop, a few different stud sizes, and maybe one sparkly moment.
Can I mix metals and finishes?
Absolutely. Mixed metal stacks are having a major moment, and honestly they look effortless done right. If you'd rather keep it cohesive, stick to one metal tone throughout.
Hoops or studs — which should I choose?
Both! That's kind of the whole point of a stack. Hoops add movement and catch the light, studs add polish and definition. A stack that's all hoops can look busy, and a stack that's all studs can look flat. Alternating between the two is what gives a stack depth.
What jewelry style is easiest for beginners?
Flat back studs are a great place to start, especially for cartilage piercings. They sit flush and comfortable against your ear (way better than a long post digging into your neck/head), and they're designed to grow with your stack since you can easily swap tops without re-inserting the entire piece.
How do flat backs actually work?
They're held together by tension between the decorative pin top and the post. It sounds fussy but it becomes second nature fast. Your order comes with a card showing how to adjust the tension bond, and if that card goes missing, we've got photo and video guides on our site to walk you through it.
Do I need a tool to put in flat backs?
Not technically, but we won't lie to you.. The Flat Back Insertion Tool makes life a million times easier, especially for trickier spots like tragus, conch, or forward helix. Without the tool, fold your ear over so you can see the back of the piercing and insert the post directly. Some customers even use an old regular earring stud as a guide.
How much does a full stack cost?
That depends entirely on you — your stack, your pace, your budget. Some people build a five-piece stack over a year, picking up one or two new pieces at a time. Others go all in for an event. Clean gently around new piercings, avoid tugging on jewelry when you change it, and give cartilage the time it needs before you go swapping tops constantly. Don't be afraid to switch things up.
